What do childcare cleaners do?
Childcare cleaners work overnight in an early learning centre, preschool or long day care service, after the last child has been collected. They cover the playrooms, the nappy change area, children’s bathrooms, cots and mats, the kitchen and bottle preparation area, staff spaces and all floors.
Two things distinguish them from ordinary commercial cleaners. The products must be low-tox and leave no residue on surfaces a child will mouth the following day, and hard toys must be washed and sanitised on a rotation rather than surface-sprayed. Everyone entering the centre must hold a current Working With Children Check.
A centre needs a cleaner every night it operates, so this is normally a roster rather than a one-off booking — the exceptions being an outbreak response, a shutdown deep clean or a pre-opening clean. Childcare cleaners Sydney centres rely on are judged by two audiences with completely different eyes. There is the parent at the door at 7am, who will decide what they think of your service in the first four seconds based on what the foyer smells like. And there is the assessor, who will want to know what product you use on the change bench and whether the person applying it holds a current check.

The nappy room decides your reputation
Everything else in a centre can be immaculate and it will not matter if the nappy area smells at drop-off. So it is not the last stop on the round, it is a room with its own scope: the bench, the mat, the bins, the taps, the step, the bin lids, and the metre of floor around all of it, disinfected every single night. Children’s bathrooms get the same treatment, including the low-level tiling behind the toilets, which is where the smell actually lives and which almost nobody cleans properly because you have to kneel down to see it.
Toys get washed, not misted
A toy that goes in a child’s mouth needs to be washed. Spraying a bin of blocks with disinfectant and letting it dry is theatre. We take hard toys out in batches, wash them, sanitise them, dry them and return them, and we rotate the batches so that every toy in the room passes through the cycle on a stated frequency. Soft toys and fabric items are laundered on whatever cycle your centre sets. It is in the written scope so you can point at it when an assessor asks.
Products chosen for the room, not for the invoice
A strong industrial cleaner is cheaper, faster and completely wrong for a room where a two-year-old will be lying on the floor in nine hours. Our childcare products are low-tox and low-odour, they do not leave a film on a surface that gets mouthed, and where a genuine disinfectant is required — change benches, toilets, an outbreak — it is applied after hours, left for its contact time, and rinsed where the label says to rinse. Outbreaks: ring early
Gastro and hand-foot-and-mouth move through a centre faster than a nightly clean can contain them. An outbreak response is a different job: every touchpoint disinfected to hospital grade, every hard toy in the affected rooms pulled and washed, soft furnishings laundered, and the rooms cleaned in a sequence that does not carry the problem from the sick room into the well one. We quote it as an extra attendance, because pretending it fits inside the nightly fee just means it gets done badly.
Who we send, and what you get before they arrive
Every cleaner rostered into a childcare centre holds a current Working With Children Check, and we give you the numbers to verify before the first shift rather than waiting to be asked. They are police-checked, inducted on your access, alarm and sign-in procedure, and it is the same person each night. Your morning staff should know the cleaner’s name, and after a month they usually do.

What products do you use in a room full of small children?
Products that are safe for a child to be in the room with the next morning: low-tox, low-odour, and never anything that leaves a residue on a surface a toddler is going to put in their mouth. Where disinfection is genuinely required — nappy change benches, toilets, a room after an outbreak — we use a hospital-grade product, apply it after hours, leave it for its contact time and rinse where the label requires it.
Do you clean the toys?
On a rotation, yes. Hard toys are washed and sanitised in batches so a different set is done each night and every toy in the room passes through the cycle. Soft toys and fabric items are laundered on the frequency your centre sets. What we do not do is spray a bin of toys and call it done — a toy that a child mouths needs washing, not misting, and the difference matters.
When do childcare cleaners attend a centre?
Overnight, after the last child has gone. That is not a preference: a wet floor, a vacuum cord and a bucket of chemical are hazards in a room with toddlers in it, and the work simply cannot be done properly around them. Centres that need a daytime presence — spills, bathroom top-ups, a room turned over after an incident — scope that separately as a light day shift.

Every night, and they are the two rooms the whole job is judged on. Change benches, bins, mats, taps, step stools and the surrounding floor are disinfected. Children's toilets, basins and the low-level tiling around them are cleaned properly rather than wiped, because they are used by children who miss and by staff who are too busy to notice. Consumables are restocked before they run out.
